CHEMICAL CHALLENGES
Corrosion: Matching Metal and Glass to Your Media
Chemical service attacks both halves of a sight glass: the metal housing and the glass window. The failure is rarely sudden — it is a slow etch on the glass, pitting under a gasket, or a housing specified for the wrong media. The fix starts with matching materials to the actual media, concentration and temperature, not to a generic "chemical" label.
Glass. Borosilicate glass to DIN 7080 is the workhorse of chemical sight glass: it resists most acids, alkalis and organic solvents, and its low thermal expansion handles the temperature swings of heated reactors. Soda-lime glass is limited to mild, low-temperature duty. Quartz is specified where process temperatures exceed borosilicate limits. A few media — hydrofluoric acid above all — attack glass itself, which is exactly why the media sheet matters before we quote.
Metal and seals. 316 stainless steel covers most chemical duty. Hastelloy steps in for chlorides and other aggressive media, and carbon steel is used where the media is compatible and cost matters. Seals are selected the same way: PTFE for broad chemical resistance, FKM for hydrocarbons and moderate acids, and graphite-based gaskets for high-temperature flanged service.

FOGGING & ETCHING
Glass Fogging and Etching in Chemical Service
Two separate problems both show up as a "dirty" window. Fogging is condensation: warm solvent or steam vapor inside the vessel meets a cooler glass surface. Etching is chemical attack: the glass surface itself is slowly eaten or roughened by the media over months of service. Fogging hides the view temporarily; etching degrades it permanently.
Anti-fog options — including a heated window variant on the SG-300 and SG-400 — keep the glass above the dew point in steam and vapor service. Etching is handled at the specification stage: borosilicate for the broadest resistance, quartz where temperatures are extreme, and an honest media review when the media attacks glass. Remember that the glass window is a consumable: inspect it for etch, chips and cracks, and replace it before it becomes a leak path.
